IN THE LAND OF PLENTY

Many years ago when Janet and I ministered in Hawaii (yes, somebody had to do it!) we met an East Indian missionary couple and their daughter. It was a genuine privilege to meet them.

I remember hearing the missionary's wife remark about the potato peelings going down the disposal - "In India, that would feed a family of four or five people."

When her husband returned from the supermarket with the little girl he told how she stood frightened and transfixed at the sight of all the food. In fact, she actually became sick to her stomach from her nerves. She had never seen such an abundance of food in all her life.

Now, I ask you: "When was the last time you were overwhelmed at the sight of the abundance of food you see at any major supermarket?" Usually, we get upset if they don't stock what we're wanting.

Thanksgiving gives us an opportunity to express our gratitude to the Lord for the bounty of food which we enjoy in this wonderful country. Please don't take for granted this blessing, unknown by most of the world's population.

I confess, I can seldom eat a scrumptious meal without an awareness that most of the world's peoples go to sleep hungry. In fact, millions are starving. Now, I know we can't fix the problems which cause starvation in third world countries (which are mostly caused by their cultures and their corrupt government officials) but we can be thankful and appreciative for what we enjoy.

I wish all were well fed and nourished. I wish that no child ever had to suffer the swollen stomach of malnourishment. I wish that no family ever had empty cupboards. I wish no elderly person ever had to eat cat food to survive.

"Oh, God, help us see our blessings; hush our grumbling and be grateful for everything we enjoy."

I pray you are blessed today.

In Christ's love and life,

Roland Scroggins
